Scripture Reading: Psalm 5:1-12

“In the morning, O Lord, You hear my voice, in the morning I lay my requests before You and wait in expectation.” (Psalm 5:3)

It must have been David’s practice to start each day in prayer. I too have made it a habit to begin my day in prayer, Bible reading and meditation, and journaling. My devotions come from the entries in my daily journal.

My time with the Lord each morning helps me prepare for the day’s activities, opportunities and challenges. It is a time that I can lift my requests to the Lord and wait in expectation for God to show me His will and direction. My wife and I also have a time of Scripture reading and prayer each morning. We pray for our children and grandchildren along with other prayer requests and thanksgivings to God.

Beginning each day in prayer enables me to have the right perspective as I prepare to begin a new day. Evidently David had some deep concerns — “Give ear to my words, O Lord, consider my sighing. Listen to my cry for help, my King and my God, for to You I pray” (vs. 1,2). David knew that God heard His prayers and He also knew that God had the power to answer them for He is our King and our God.

In the morning David called out to God. In his distress, he found great peace after he prayed — “But let all who take refuge in You be glad, let them ever sing for joy. Spread Your protection over them, that those who love Your name may rejoice in You. For surely, O Lord, You bless the righteous; You surround them with Your favor as with a shield” (vs. 11,12).

After my morning prayers, I find great joy and peace, for I know God will spread His protection over me and that He will surround me with His favor. Morning prayers prepare us for the day and they enable us to gain God’s perspective on life.

Lord Jesus, my King and my God, I cherish my times with You each morning. I take refuge in You and I am filled with joy in Your presence. Thank You for the privilege of prayer. I know You listen to my prayers and You will answer them according to Your perfect will.
