A REFUGE FOR THE OPPRESSED

Scripture Reading: Psalm 9:1-20

“The Lord reigns forever; He has established His throne for judgment. He will judge the world in righteousness; He will govern the peoples with justice. The Lord is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble.” (Psalm 9:7-9)

God is just and it is comforting to know that oppression and injustice will not go unpunished. Most of us have no idea how much persecution takes place in the world each day. Many people suffer oppression and abuse. God does not close His eyes to these things. Because He is just, sin must be punished — “He will in no way leave the guilty unpunished” (Exodus 34:7b).

This Psalm offers hope and encouragement for the oppressed people in the world. “The Lord is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble.” I have heard stories of some of our brothers and sisters in Christ who are paying a huge price for their faith. They seek refuge in our sovereign Lord.

The great news in this Psalm is — “The Lord reigns forever.” He sovereignly rules over His creation. He is in control, even when things seem out of control. He has a purpose and a plan for each of us, and He will bring every thing in conformity to the purpose of His will (Ephesians 1:11).

The Psalmist reminds us — “He will judge the world in righteousness.” There is a day of final judgment when Jesus returns in His glory and “He will judge the world in righteousness.” While evil people may escape human justice, they will appear before the Judge and will be held accountable for their sins.

“Those who know Your name will trust in You, for You, Lord, have never forsaken those who seek You” (v. 10).

Sovereign Lord, it is so comforting to know that You reign forever. You are in control of all things. I am safe and secure in Your hands. It is also comforting to know that You do not close Your eyes to injustice and oppression. You see and hear the cries of people who are suffering at the hands of their oppressors. I trust in You and know that You will never forsake me.
