Scripture Reading: Psalm 11:1-7
“When the foundations are being destroyed, what can the righteous do?” (Psalm 11:3)
On the Sunday following 911, I chose this passage for my sermon text. Our nation was in shock. We had experienced a terrorist attack on our own soil. The plot had been well thought out. The twin towers of the World Trade Center were symbols of our financial foundation. The Pentagon was a symbol of our military power. The other plane that crashed was headed for Washington, the seat of our government. It was as though the foundations of our society (financial, military, and governmental) were being destroyed. What can the righteous do?
There may be times in our lives when the foundations of our families may be under attack. We may face dark times of uncertainties when the very foundations of our lives are being destroyed. Uncertainties, fears, and worries undermine us. What can the righteous do?
The answer is found in the next verse — “The Lord is in His holy temple; the Lord is on His heavenly throne. He observes the sons of men; His eyes examine them” (v. 4). The answer to the question — “What can the righteous do?” — is simple but profound — “The Lord is in His holy temple; the Lord is on His heavenly throne.” The Sovereign Lord of all is enthroned and He is in full control, even when our foundations are being destroyed! He observes all that is going on in our lives.
We can find peace and rest through perilous times when we remember that the Lord is in control, even when it seems like everything is out of control. He will deal with those who do evil things — “The Lord examines the righteous, but the wicked and those who love violence His soul hates” (v. 8).
The next time your life seems out of control remember the words of this Psalm — “The Lord is in His holy temple; the Lord is on His heavenly throne.” He is in control of all things. We can trust Him fully!
Sovereign Lord, how comforting it is to know that You are in Your holy temple. You are seated upon Your heavenly throne. You are in control of every detail of my life. You rule and over-rule. I can be at peace even when things seem out of control and when I am under attack, for You are reigning as the great and all powerful King.
