Scripture Reading: Psalm 14:1-7
“The fool says in his heart, ‘There is not God.’ They are corrupt; their deeds are vile; there is no one who does good.” (Psalm 14:1)
Foolish people do not acknowledge God. I am reminded of Paul’s words in Romans — “Although they claim to be wise, they became fools” (Romans 1:22). The fundamental problem is that foolish people suppress God’s truth — “The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness, since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them” (Romans 1:18,19). In spite of all the evidences of God, foolish people not only ignore them; they actively suppress the truth about God. They refuse to accept all the evidences of God’s existence, love, and grace.
Creation itself is evidence of the existence of God — “For since the creation of the world, God’s invisible qualities — His eternal power and divine nature — have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse” (Romans 1:20). It is sheer foolishness to think that the universe came about by chance. How can we look at the beauty, diversity, complexity, and balance in the created order and deny that God is the master architect and creator of these things? Yet, people who claim to be so wise vehemently deny God’s existence.
Because the fool says in his heart there is no God, foolish people are corrupt and their deeds are vile. The Psalmist sums up their condition — “There is no one who does good.” This is the result of the sinful state of mankind. Because they suppress the truth, they do not understand the things of God nor do they seek Him — “The Lord looks down from heaven on the sons of men to see if there are any who understand, any who seek God. All have turned aside; they have together become corrupt; there is none who does good, not even one” (vs. 2,3).
Paul quotes these very words in Romans 3 when he describes the sad state of unbelievers — “As it is written: ‘There is no one righteous, not even one; there is no one who understands, no one who seeks God. All have turned away; they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one'” (Romans 3:10-12).
We should be burdened for lost people. They may think they are wise; but they have become fools. Only God can open their eyes to the truth of the gospel.
Lord Jesus, I pray for my friends and family members who continue to suppress the truth about You. I pray that You open their eyes to the wonder of the gospel. I am burdened for them and desire for them to know You. Thank You for opening my eyes to Your truth when I was suppressing it. You alone can save.
