UNSHAKEN

Scripture Reading: Psalm 16:1-11

“I have set the Lord always before me. Because He is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.” (Psalm 16:8)

This short Psalm is filled with words of hope and joy. The Psalmist reminds us that apart from God, we have nothing good — “I said to the Lord, ‘You are my Lord, apart from You I have no good thing'” (v. 2). The Psalmist knew that all good things come from God — “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows” (James 1:17). Everything good that we have is a gift from our heavenly Father.

In Him we have security — “Lord, You have assigned me my portion and my cup; You have made my lot secure” (v. 5). God sovereignly has a plan for each of us. He has ordained our future. He has provided for our needs and He has made our lot secure. We can find our refuge in Him — “Keep me safe, O God, for in You I take refuge” (v. 1).

Because God is our refuge, we will not be shaken — “I have set the Lord always before me. Because He is at my right hand, I will not be shaken” (v. 8). Here is the key — to set the Lord always before us, to trust Him and rest in His sovereignty. When the storms of life come (and they will!), we will not be shaken, for our God is our refuge and strength. “Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest secure” (v. 9).

God is our refuge (v. 1) and our gracious and generous Lord (v. 2). He has made our lot secure (v. 5). Because He is at our right hand, we will not be shaken (v. 8)!

Lord, I have set You before me. Because You are at my right hand, I will not be shaken! You are my refuge and my strength. I know that every good thing that comes my way is from You. Thank You for being so gracious and so generous to me.
