Scripture Reading: Psalm 23:1-6
“He makes me lie down in green pastures, He leads me beside quiet waters, He restores my soul, He guides me in paths of righteousness for His name’s sake.” (Psalm 23:2,3)
Our Shepherd knows what we need. In fact, He knows our needs better than we know them ourselves. He knows when we need times of rest for our souls — “He makes me lie down in green pastures.” Notice that the Shepherd takes charge and makes His sheep lie down. He knows what is best for them. He makes them lie down in green pastures, grassy meadows. Here the sheep find a resting place that is pleasant and comforting.
Our Shepherd also leads His sheep beside quiet waters — “He leads me beside quiet waters.” Picture a slowly moving brook in your mind. This is a place of provision. We need the refreshing waters of the Spirit to restore our souls — “He restores my soul.” Our Shepherd brings spiritual nourishment to our innermost beings.
Our Shepherd leads us in the paths of righteousness — “He guides me in paths of righteousness for His name’s sake.” Our Shepherd is our righteousness. The very righteousness of our Good Shepherd, Jesus, is imputed to us when we are justified. He also shows us how to live righteous lives and He gives us the direction and power to do so.
The bottom line is that our Shepherd knows all our needs and He provides for them. He takes care of us, protects us, provides for us and nourishes us.
Lord Jesus, my Good Shepherd, You know my needs better than I know them myself. You know what is best for me. You provide for all my needs. You take care of me and You give me direction for living my life in a way that honors You. Thank You for Your tender care and gracious provisions.
