GOSPEL LIVING

Scripture Reading: Philippians 1:27-30

“Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ.” (Philippians 1:27)

When we grasp how much God has done for us in Christ, we will be motivated to live our lives in a manner worthy of the gospel. The gospel is about humility. We must see ourselves as unworthy sinners who do not deserve anything from God except His displeasure. Yet the gospel brings great comfort to us when we realize how much God loves us and how He accepts us as His dear children. Thus, conducting ourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ means that we treat others the way God has treated us.

We must learn to have a broken and contrite spirit — “The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, You will not despise” (Psalm 51:17). Living out of our brokenness enables us to conduct ourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel.

Out of our love and gratitude to God for His free gift of salvation, we are motivated to obey Him. Obedience to His Word is crucial as we seek to conduct ourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. It is the love of Christ that compels us to be obedient to Him. God delights in our obedience — “Does the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the voice of the Lord? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams” (I Samuel 15:22).

To conduct ourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ means that we become humble, gracious, generous, and loving people who delight in obeying our heavenly Father. This is true gospel living.

Lord Jesus, I know that I am unworthy to receive the blessings You have bestowed upon me. Yet You have brought the power of the gospel into my heart and saved me. I desire to conduct myself in a manner worthy of the gospel. I cannot do this in my own strength, but I know that I can do all things through You. Make me a humble, gracious, generous and loving person who delights in obeying You.
