Scripture Reading: Psalm 33:8-11
“But the plans of the Lord stand forever, the purposes of His heart through all generations.” (Psalm 33:11)
One of the most comforting doctrines in Scripture is the doctrine of the sovereignty of God. God is in full control of all things. Nothing happens by chance. From eternity past, God has established a comprehensive plan for His creation. This comprehensive plan includes plans for each of His children.
Because God is all-powerful, His plans cannot be altered by anyone or any situation. The Psalmist reminds us of the power of our God — “Let all the earth fear the Lord, let all the people of the world revere Him. For He spoke, and it came to be; He commanded, and it stood firm” (vs. 8,9).
Human beings and nations develop their plans, but they are subject to God’s plan — “The Lord foils the plans of the nations; He thwarts the purposes of the peoples” (v. 10). Any plans we make are subject to God’s plans — “But the plans of the Lord stand forever, the purposes flow out of His loving and gracious heart. His plans are for our good — “‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future'” (Jeremiah 29:11).
Because God’s plans are firm and secure for all generations, God brings everything in conformity with His plans — “In Him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plans of Him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of His will” (Ephesians 1:11). Be comforted because “the plans of the Lord stand forever, the purposes of His heart through all generations.”
Sovereign Lord, I know that You have established Your plans in eternity past. You rule and over-rule all things to bring Your plans to pass. I know You have plans for my life, plans that give me hope and a future.
