Scripture Reading: Romans 3:1-8
“What if some were unfaithful? Does their faithfulness nullify the faithlessness of God?” (Romans 3:3)
I am so thankful that God’s faithfulness to us is not dependent upon our faithfulness to Him. God is loyal to His promises, constant in His love and steadfast toward His children. He remains faithful even when we aren’t faithful to Him. “He who calls you is faithful; He will surely do it” (I Thessalonians 5:24).
God makes it clear to us — “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness” (Lamentations 3:22). God’s steadfast love for us never ceases; His mercies never come to an end! We know this because God’s faithfulness is based on His character — He must always remain true to His nature. When God promises something, He will do it because He is a good and perfect God.
Paul wrote these words to Timothy — “If we are faithless, He remains faithful — for He cannot deny Himself” (II Timothy 2:13). God’s faithfulness is not conditional upon our faithfulness. Aren’t you glad of that? He will never give up on us. He will never cease loving us and showing us His mercy. He was faithful when He sent Jesus to save us and He is faithful to never let us go.
The words of Thomas Chisholm’s hymn sum it up — “Great is Thy faithfulness, O God, my Father. There is no shadow of turning with Thee. They changest not, Thy compassions fail not. As Thou has been Thou forever wilt be. Great is Thy faithfulness! Great is Thy faithfulness! Morning by morning new mercies I see; all I have needed Thy hand hath provided — Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!
Lord God, I am so thankful that You are a faithful God. I know how unfaithful to you I can be at times. Yet You never stop loving me and You never give up on me. When I fail You, You reach out to me in Your tender mercies. Great is Your faithfulness, Lord, unto me!
